BG Kazakhstan grants two kazakhstani research fellows from Nazarbayev University with postgraduate scholarships
1 July, 2013, Astana:BG Kazakhstan was today delighted to award two Kazakhstani research fellows from Nazarbayev University Research and Innovation System (NURIS) with the postgraduate scholarship certificates to study at United Kingdom universities.
Mr Peter Costello, BG Kazakhstan President, awarded BG Kazakhstan sponsored postgraduate scholarships during the Roundtable on Educational Cooperation for Skills, Science & Technology and Innovation organized in the framework of the first visit of the British Prime Minister David Cameron to Kazakhstan.
Mr Costello said: “BG Kazakhstan is delighted to be working with Nazarbayev University in support of Kazakhstan’s broader commitment to education and modernisation. These vital areas have been clear priorities since independence and we are grateful for the opportunity to make a contribution to the Republic’s vision.
“Also, our partnership with Nazarbayev University highlights the emphasis that BG Group places on science education, and reflects the substantial long-term investments we are making in Kazakhstan, one of the most dynamic economies in Central Asia.”
BG Kazakhstan supports Nazarbayev University as part of its broader social investment programme aimed at promoting education in the disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Since 2011 BG Kazakhstan’s partnership with Nazarbayev University has led to investment in a range of areas, including the promotion of scientific research related to energy, support for university teachers to do research at British universities, funding for a scientific library and café, and support for scholarships for undergraduate students.
To date BG Group has committed to US$1.3 million to the following projects at Nazarbayev University:
- One PhD scholarship in economics for the university’s academic staff;
- Ten post-graduate graduate scholarships for highly qualified research fellows to study at top UK universities from 2012 until 2017;
- Establishing a BG Chair in Energy Research;
- Founding a BG Scientific Library.
