Tengizchevroil JV (TCO), which develops the Tengiz and Korolevskoe oil and gas fields in the Atyrau region of Kazakhstan, resumes oil transportation via Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline. The transportation along this route, called the Southern route, was interrupted in 2009 due to tariff disputes.
The Southern route allows you to export Tengiz oil from Kazakhstan via the port of Aktau through the Caspian Sea to the port of Baku and next to the port of Batumi on the Black Sea or to the port of Ceyhan on the Mediterranean Sea via Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline for further deliveries to international markets.
TCO has chartered Aktau tanker owned by Kazmortransflot to transport oil from Aktau to Baku, where the oil will be shipped to the BTC. Currently, TCO transports crude oil through the pipeline of the Caspian Pipeline Consortium, the rail route to Odessa and Taman, as well as through the mixed routes Aktau-Baku-Batumi and Aktau-Baku-Kulevi.
The agreement on the transportation of Tengiz oil through the BTC pipeline between the BTC-operator BTC Co and Tengizchevroil was signed in 2008, and it started working at the end of October 2008. In October and December 2008 the BTC transported 136.7 thousand tonnes of Tengiz oil, and in 2009 - 1.9 million tonnes. The flow volume of Tengiz oil via BTC pipeline amounted to 40 thousand bbl/day.
