Ahead of Time: CPC Safety Day in Almaty
The high-altitude Medeu Sports Complex, located in scenic surroundings near Almaty, hosted participants of the 12th International Safety Day of the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) on September 10.

Safety Day is an annual company event aimed at increasing employee motivation towards safe work practices and demonstrating the company's leadership commitment to high occupational safety standards, both in production and daily activities. Enhancing employee responsibility and motivation is achieved through close interaction with management during the event and participation in a competitive program where occupational safety and industrial security knowledge is tested in a contest format. Winners receive valuable prizes, and every participant is rewarded with memorable souvenirs, along with a boost of energy and a positive mood.

The event has been held regularly since 2012, with invitations extended to representatives from shareholder companies, contractors, and partners of the international consortium and regional government authorities. Each year, Safety Day takes place in a new location, allowing participants to explore the beauty of the local region and neighboring areas. Past events have been held in Novorossiysk, Astrakhan, Stavropol, Krasnodar, Elista, and Atyrau.

This year, the event, held under the theme “Ahead of Time,” took place at the high-altitude Medeu Sports Complex near Almaty. About 600 guests from 24 companies participated in the event. In the competitive segment, 28 teams representing CPC divisions, contractors of the international project, and partner companies from Russia and Kazakhstan competed.

“The main theme of today’s Safety Day is our commitment and desire to adhere to the fundamental principles of a safe production culture. It’s not just about following and complying, but about being leaders, progressing, and taking proactive initiatives,” CPC General Director Nikolay Gorban said as he addressed participants at the opening ceremony. “Today’s motto is ‘Ahead of Time.’ All 28 teams will show that they are ready to lead—not only keeping up with the times but acting ahead of the curve, setting the trend for development, and leading others along the way. Together, we can achieve our goals.”

A strict but fair panel of judges evaluated the contestants’ general theoretical knowledge of occupational safety, their ability to investigate workplace incidents and identify root causes, correctly issue work permits, identify potential risks before starting tasks, and develop compensatory measures to mitigate identified risks.
Other important topics covered in the competition included transportation safety, traffic rules, emergency response, CPC’s "Life-Saving Rules," fundamentals of environmental safety, and more.
The Marine Terminal team took first place in the overall team standings among CPC divisions. The Eastern Region team finished second, and the Central Region team earned third place.

Among contractor organizations, the team from UTP LLC claimed first place. The combined team from SRDI CaspiyMunayGas JSC took second place, while the teams from Zaman Quantor LLP, SK BIN LLC, and Prom Expert LLC shared third place.
Accident-free work and strict adherence to safety rules remain an absolute priority for the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC). Recently, the company adopted a new Strategic Plan for Occupational Safety, Industrial Security, and Environmental Protection for 2025-2027.
“We’ve recently completed another large-scale project – the Debottlenecking Program (DBNP). Any oil and gas sector specialist will agree that construction often significantly contributes to the statistics on accidents, incidents, and traffic accidents. I’m confident that the system of Safety Culture we implemented years ago, along with our related events and information campaigns—especially our team-building corporate Safety Day—have greatly helped us minimize these occurrences,” said Nikolay Gorban. “The corresponding corporate standard was adopted at the beginning of 2022. According to the global Bradley scale, our company has reached the third, ‘independent,’ level of Safety Culture, and we are continuing our steady progress forward.”
