Hi-Tech Drilling: New Horizons of Directional Drilling

In the modern world, the process of drilling oil and gas wells is becoming increasingly demanding in terms of drilling efficiency and accuracy. It leads to the use of highly efficient equipment and an increase in the cost of the final product - the well. The development of hard-to-recover reserves is also steadily increasing, which requires the use of hi-tech equipment and leads to high economic costs.
Generally speaking, drilling a well is not an end in itself. The ultimate goal of drilling is to obtain the highest possible formation fluid withdrawal rate and the shortest possible time for the transfer of the drilling facility into operation. The maximum effect in this is provided by horizontal wells, which have a significantly larger surface of the well walls in the productive formation.
The issues of drilling deep vertical and horizontal wells, extended reach wells and the development of hard-to-recover reserves, as well as issues of trouble-free operation and speed are solved by the use of rotary steerable system (RSS). It allows to reach previously inaccessible depths and significantly improves drilling accuracy even in the most difficult geological conditions. Implementing of the RSS in the fields of the Republic of Kazakhstan was at one time a breakthrough that significantly improved the technological efficiency and safety of drilling operations.
But up to the present time, the issue of accessibility and cost of this technology remained unresolved. After all, all rotary steerable systems used in Kazakhstan are provided exclusively by foreign service companies. In addition to RSS itself, foreign partners offer a range of related services that lead to a significant increase in the cost of work. But these services are currently successfully performed by domestic oilfield service companies, such as Oil Tools Service LLP, Zhigermunaiservice LLP and many others. And Service Company Hi-Tech Drilling LLP is also ready to provide its services with high-tech equipment such as RSS.
Service Company Hi-Tech Drilling is the only official representative of D-Tech UK Ltd. – the manufacturer of rotary steerable systems in Kazakhstan and in the entire Caspian region. D-Tech provides high-end drilling technologies to the market, while not having directional drilling services itself. The company’s mission is to help its customers to develop in the market while not compete with them in terms of service. The company stands out for its propensity for innovation and improving the efficiency of drilling operations, which makes it an important partner in the oil and gas industry.
The use of rotary steerable systems from Hi-Tech Drilling in combination with drilling engineering and technological support services like, MWD/LWD and bit service from small and medium-sized service companies of Kazakhstan increases drilling efficiency. Due to the withdrawal from foreign monopolies, such cooperation gives a positive technical and economic result. Engineers of Oil Tools Service LLP (provides a range of oilfield services) and Hi-Tech Drilling Service Company LLP (provides high-tech equipment, including RSS) clearly proved this when working at the Chinarevskoye field in June this year.
TEAM AND EQUIPMENT

The experienced Hi-Tech Drilling team consists of the specialists who are constantly striving to improve drilling processes using the most modern technologies. The D-Tech equipment presented by our company allows you to solve complex drilling tasks, ensuring high accuracy and minimal costs. HiTech Drilling actively implements advanced developments to achieve maximum efficiency
WHAT IS RSS?
Rotary steerable system is a hightech solution that optimizes the drilling process by precisely controlling the direction and inclination of drilling in real time. Unlike traditional methods, RSS minimizes deviations from a planned trajectory, which is especially valuable in difficult geological conditions requiring high maneuverability. In the Chinarevskoye field project, HiTech Drilling company used equipment from D-Tech, ensuring reliability and high productivity of drilling operations.

THE MAIN ADVANTAGES OF THE RSS:
- Precision and controllability: precise control of drilling direction reduces the risk of deviations, allowing you to effectively reach target zones.
- Time and resource savings: More precise tool management reduces the need for adjustments, which speeds up drilling and reduces costs.
- Increased safety: Reducing the number of deviations and vibrations reduces the risk of accidents, increasing the safety of work.
WORK EXPERIENCE AT THE CHINAREVSKOYE FIELD
At the Chinarevskoye field, the rotary steerable system RST475 provided by Hi-Tech Drilling was successfully used to drill a well. The system is in the ‘Push-the-bit’ category and uses a communication facility based on fluid flow. Over the past 10 years, DTech’s RSS have drilled 1,827 wells in 14 countries around the world, which Kazakhstan joined this year. The total penetration during this time was more than 1,650,240 meters, which is approximately equal to the distance between the extreme points in the south and north of Kazakhstan.
Drilling tasks at the Chinarevskoye field
- Minimize the high risk of differential pressure sticking.
- Eliminate problems related to the stability of the borehole.
- To achieve a stable retention of the zenith angle of 37° in the conditions of changeable formations.
- Reduce downhole shock and vibration, stick and slip.
- Achieve planned drilling efficiency targets, including drilling rates.
Decision
Drilling a well of the planned trajectory using the bottom hole assembly agreed with the Customer, including RSS RST475.
Using the PDC Ultera RPS613 drill bit from Oil Tools Service LLP, equipped with a wear-resistant and impact-resistant PDC cutter.
Using the Scientific Drilling MWD system from Oil Tools Service LLP, which allows you to receive data on inclination, as well as shocks and vibrations in real time.
Results
- An interval of 4255 m - 4358 m was drilled using RSS.
- Pull out of the whole to replace the drilling bit before the end of the resource of the RSS was made by the decision of the customer due to a quick change of formation layers
- The need to use the mud motor in combination with the RSS has been identified to improve the drilling rate, reduce the impact of shocks and vibrations on bottom hole assembly, increase the life of the top drive and drilling pipes.
FINAL RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS
The experience of using a rotary steerable system at the Chinarevskoye field emphasized the importance of choosing proper equipment and constantly monitoring technologies adapted to the conditions.
We are pleased to cooperate with all companies that are ready to raise up the level of their service to international standards and increase the profitability of their business in the market of providing services for drilling oil and gas wells.
