Industry Events

Autumn in Kazakhstan is traditionally rich with industry events. In September, experts gathered at a conference in Astana organized by Globuc to discuss the challenges and opportunities in oil and gas processing and petrochemicals within Central Asia and the Caspian region. We were particularly intrigued by the insights shared by John Roberts, an expert on energy security and a member of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. One of his remarks stood out for its paradoxical nature: “If fossil fuel production increases in Central Asia, its markets will be limited.” Intrigued? Read on—John Roberts is our guest contributor for this issue.
Later in the month, Almaty, still a significant regional business hub, hosted the annual KIOGE exhibition and conference. Key themes in the panel sessions, discussions, and private conversations focused on gas-based chemistry as a new industry for Kazakhstan, along with prospects for the development of the gas sector, the $150 billion dispute between the Kazakhstani government and Kashagan investors, the Tengiz Future Growth Project, and the potential extension of the current TCO contract, which is set to expire in less than a decade.
All these topics are covered in today’s issue of the journal.
