Cyber Defense Strategies in the Oil and Gas Sector: Expert Insights

Dear friends,
The issue of the journal you are holding is unlike any other. And you can tell just by looking at the cover. At first glance, it resembles a scene from a sci-fi film about the future. But time has accelerated in unprecedented ways, and what once seemed like bold fantasy is now becoming part of our everyday reality.
The oil and gas industry is no exception. A century ago, the industry’s defining image was a roughneck in an oil-stained coverall. Today, it’s impossible to imagine a field or a refinery without complex information systems, digital technologies, virtual reality headsets, and now – artificial intelligence.
This entire digital ecosystem requires protection, and cybersecurity experts understand this better than anyone. That’s why, for this issue, we invited Kazakhstani cybersecurity specialist Evgeny Pitolin, co-chair of the Cybersecurity Committee of the QazTech Alliance, to serve as our guest editor. Together with his colleagues, he shares insights into building cyber defense strategies for the oil and gas sector.
How should the industry structure its response to cyber threats? How can companies create a “digital” shield for their operations? What should be done if a cyberattack does occur? What digital threats exist in the private lives of oil and gas executives? You’ll find answers to these and many other pressing questions in this special issue.
