Emba is in the Process of Re-Energizing
Artur Shakhnazaryan, Atyrau
The subsidiary of the national company EmbaMunayGas, having an actual production only in 3 of 43 fields, needs both commissioning of new reserves and the intensification at the old wells. This offers great opportunities for service companies that will be able to proffer their services at a competitive price
The last stage of development

At the beginning of October 2013, the national company KazMunayGas and Schlumberger have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for technical cooperation. The document was signed by the Deputy Chairman of the Board of KMG on Geology and Advanced Projects Kurmangazy Iskaziev and the President of Schlumberger in Russia and Central Asia Gokhan Saygi.
Interestingly, the Chief Geologist of the national company Kurmangazy Iskaziev was formerly the Chief Geologist of EmbaMunayGas andhe is the one who knows better about resource depletion of his native company. More than three dozen EmbaMunayGas production fields are in the final stages of development. Almost the entire production of EmbaMunayGas takes place in 3 of the 43 fields. The signed Memorandum determines the areas of cooperation such as the evaluation and optimization of the production at the existing KMG fields (Botakhan, Karazhanbas, Kotyrtas North/Moldabek, Mokat East, Nurzhanov East/West (Prorva) and Kamyshitovoe Southwest), using advanced exploration methods, increasing the field development quality, enhancing oil and gas production and improving well abandonment procedures. In addition, the companies agreed to cooperate in the advanced training of KMG technical experts at Schlumberger facilities and training centres.
Schlumberger-Petrofac: in trail
Incidentally, three months ago, these same tasks were contained in another memorandum under execution. Literally, it was at the end of June 2013, when KazMunayGas entered into contact with the British company Petrofac for the evaluation of the production fields of EmbaMunayGas JSC (EMG). The difference between Schlumberger and Petrofac contracts is that Petrofac will work on fields of the 4th stage - the stage of depletion, while Schlumberger will be engaged in the development of the most profitable fields of EMG. For EMG there are certain problems even with the most feeder fields. Oil production at the largest field of EmbaMunayGas - Kenbay (Kotyrtas North/Moldabek) is at a lower level than it might be expected based on the resources of the field.
