The Business of Safety in Kazakhstan

Interview with Zhandos Orazaliyev,
General Director, Lloyd’s Register Kazakhstan LLP

Lloyd’sRegisteris an independent organisation that provides engineering, technical and business services to industry worldwide, including to the oil and gas and manufacturing sectors in Kazakhstan. We spoke with Zhandos Orazaliyev about his organisation’s role in the country and regionally.
Zhandos, we haven’t seen each other for a year. What changes have taken place in this time?
The main change for our organisation is a move from being regionally organised to one that adopts a global structure, based on client services and needs. This is a more streamlined approach for our clients and, internally, it better supports operations too, especially when transferring our specialists around the world. For example, some of our experts supported a large project in Korea recently. Another one of our representatives is currently working in the Middle East.
What are the main services that your organisation provides in Kazakhstan?
We provide three main types of service across the country. First, we help companies demonstrate compliance with local and international standards by conducting inspections. Second, we provide a range of technical consulting support, for example performing vibrationand other analysis to resolve technical issues. Finally, we conduct second- and third-party inspections at our clients’ requests. One of the country’s two ASME inspectors works for our organisation.
What makes Lloyd’s Register different?

As you know, Lloyd’s Register has been established in Kazakhstan since 2006, helping our clients to manufacture and manage high-risk equipment and assets. Perhaps best known as Britain’s classification society, our organisation has over 250 years experience of promoting safety. Beyond the quality of our technical services and advice, what makes our organisation different is our independence, which enables us to best meet our mission to safeguard people, plant, performance and the environment.
With no shareholders, we invest heavily in research and development to support emerging industry technologies, in acquiring complementary companies to offer an even greater portfolio of client services and in training and technical education. In fact, we have established the Lloyd’sRegisterFoundationto manage this funding. Our Global Technology Centre in Singapore is a recent, multi-million US dollar investment. This is a collaborative project, working in partnership with Singapore’s education community. Specialists in the Centre are conducting oil-and-gas related research, among other areas, and training the next group of talented engineers and technical specialists.
In Kazakhstan, we work with the Kazakh-Britain Technical University (KBTU), where we help students develop their skills and knowledge.
A key area of focus for Lloyd’s Register Kazakhstan is employee training and professional development. How long does it take to train one Lloyd’s Register specialist?
