The national gas operator QazaqGaz (subsidiary of Samruk-Kazyna) and PetroChina have agreed to increase gas supplies to China in 2025, the press service of the Kazakh company reports.
As part of the Kazakh-Chinese business forum in Astana, the head of QazaqGaz, Sanjar Zharkeshov, and the Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors of PetroChina International, Wu Junli, signed an addendum to a three-year natural gas purchase and sale agreement.
"This step will increase gas exports to China in 2025, which confirms the strategic partnership between Kazakhstan and China in the energy sector. The Kazakh gas industry acts as a reliable supplier of resources to enhance the energy security of the region," the message says.
The release does not disclose the exact volume of gas supplies to China. Kazakhstan has an existing contract for the export of domestic gas to China for 2023-2026 (signed in October 2023 in Beijing). Kazakhstan annually supplies about 4 billion cubic metres of gas per year to China, while the republic itself consumes about 21 billion cubic metres.
In January-August 2024, Kazakhstan supplied 2.3 billion cubic metres of gas to China for a total of $575.7 million.
