According to Kazinform, NC Kazakhstan Engineering JSC is establishing shipbuilding and ship-repairing facilities in Mangistau region. Since NC KazMunayGas is also engaged in a similar project for the construction of an identical plant in the port of Kuryk on the Caspian Sea shore (KMG has a partner, financing, feasibility studies fulfilled, and DED is under development), the issue of the joint implementation of the project is under consideration.
"In the Kazakhstan sector of the Caspian Sea offshore area there are about 340 civil and military ships. Their average age is about 30 years. According to the Ministry of Transport and Communications, by 2020 the demand for new vessels will be approximately 240 units of civil ships. The demand for ship repair is about 200 repairs per year, which will total to about 1,500 by 2020.
The plant is necessary because there are no coast shipyards, and the capacity of the existing shipyards is not sufficient to provide repair of all ships with displacement of over 600 tonnes. The current shipbuilding facilities of our company (Ural plant “Zenit” JSC, R&D establishment “Gidropribor” JSC) are located in Uralsk city at a distance of approximately 510 kilometres from the coast.
The waterway capacity of the Ural River (shoaling, short navigation period) makes it difficult to further develop these shipbuilding enterprises, namely, the production and repair of vessels over 500 tonnes», explained the Deputy Chairman of the Board of NC Kazakhstan Engineering JSC Kayrat Tilebaldinov.
