A really epoch-making event for Kazakhstan occurred on March 26, five kilometers from the city of Atyrau. The country, possessing enormous oil reserves but having no opportunity to export its oil without restrictions and depending thus on the will of Russia, at last has received a direct outlet to the world market. A long-suffering ten- year project for construction of an export pipeline from Western Kazakhstan to the Black Sea through the territory of Russia, has finished up with a convincing victory! Though, a couple of years ago there was little confidence that the pipe will exist.
