Chairman of the Board of KazMunayGas (KMG) Magzum Mirzagaliev held a meeting in Astana with a delegation of the Italian oil and gas company Eni S.p.A. led by Director of Exploration and Production of the Natural Resources Division Luca Vignati.
Having discussed a wide range of issues of bilateral cooperation, KMG and Eni agreed in principle to jointly implement a project for the construction of a hybrid power plant operating on renewable energy sources (wind+solar) and gas (as a manoeuvrable power in order to stabilise energy supply and save gas resources) in the Mangystau region with a capacity of 120 MW.
“This project is the result of the productive joint work of our companies and serves to implement the strategic task of the head of our state to develop green projects. In addition to strengthening the energy security of the region, its important dividends will be the inflow of investments and the creation of new jobs,” Magzum Mirzagaliyev noted in his speech.
Also during the negotiations, it was noted that the production and supply of electricity to target facilities (in particular, the facilities of Ozenmunaygas and the Kazakh gas processing plant are being considered) will eliminate the risk of emergency shutdowns in production due to frequent power outages.
The project implementation period is scheduled for 2023-2025. Thus, the solar generation unit is scheduled for commissioning in 2024, and wind and gas in 2025. The estimated budget is about $300 million.
The agreement on the construction of a hybrid power plant is a continuation of the work of KMG and ENI within the framework of the memorandum of cooperation signed in July 2021 in the development of energy transition projects for the production and sale of electricity, KazMunayGas explained.
