Kazakhstan Engineering – the Base of the ScienceConsuming Economy of the Future (to the 40th anniversary of the “KAZGIPRONEFTETRANS” Engineering Company)

Over the years of its existence, the Company has implemented more than thousand projects, significant for the country’s economy. The Company’s executives told the Petroleum reporter about the anniversary, the future of Tengiz, the new generation engineers training and other large-scale projects.
The history of the Company
Back in 1974, Special Design Bureau (SDB), affiliate of Kazglavneftesnab, was created. At the beginning of its activities, SDB was engaged in designing and building of oil delivery terminals, gas stations, oil trunk pipelines, elaboration of advanced industry development schemes, and certification of existing facilities, and machine industry developmentsfor use in the petroleum products supply system.
In 1986, SDB was reorganized into the State Design Institute for pipelines, oil delivery terminals and filling stations - SDI Kazgiproneftetrans. In 2001, SDI "Kazgiproneftetrans" was reorganized into the engineering company "KAZGIPRONEFTETRANS". Since then, the Company is constantly expanding its sphere of activity - the Company undertook projects related to pipelines, refineries and fields arrangement. Thus, today the Company designs facilitiesfor mining, oil and gas companies, oil refineries and gas processing plants, petrochemical industries, as well as for oil products marketing and distribution systems.

The oil industry is already getting crowded - thus, KGNT starts its activities in the field of civil engineering. And designs items for the International Specialized Exhibition EXPO 2017 in Astana. At the same time, KGNT is not newcomer to civil facilities designing civil construction and design, because almost every out of hundreds completed industrial projects included many elements of civil and social purpose.
Today KGNT offers services for industrial and civil engineering:
- research and pre-design preparation, collection of baseline data;
- complex engineering surveys;
- elaboration of feasibility study for objects construction;

designing (design estimate and working documentation) and adaptation of international projects according to the RoK standards:
- planning of oil and gas fields,
- oil and gas trunk pipelines,
- gas processing and petrochemical industries,
- facilities and transport, storage and distribution of oil and gas, gas processing products,
- oil and gas processing products sea terminals and railheads
- civil engineering objects,
- soil recultivation and land utilization.

- design and technical supervision;
- state and industry regulatory technical documentation development.
Main achievements
According to the information, provided to Petroleum by Mr. Fuad Serikov, CEO of KGNT, Doctor of Technical Science, Professor, corresponding member of the National Academy of Engineering of the RoK, member of the Coordinating Council of KAZENERGY Association of science, innovation and local content development, engineering companies it is first and foremost a community of skilled people with a specialized education.
And one of the key achievements, in his view, is the creation of a team of engineers with extensive experience in technologically complex objects. According to the top manager, it is impossible to make a good engineer in a year or two, the way up in this profession is thorny, long and difficult. This makes skilled staff even more valuable. Today, more than five hundred employees are employed by KGNT, 90% of them are engineers.
The experience of the company as a whole is no less important than the experience of its certain members. This experience formed the basis for the internal procedures organisation. "We know how to execute large-scale projects, we know the sequence of their execution. - says Mr. Serikov. - We know which specialists are required for each stage of implementation.
And we know how to work without errors. It is very well known that designing mistakes are very costly. The development stage (designing) requires from 5 % to 10 % of the project cost, it is not that much. But the mistakes at the design stage are practically irreparable. The reparation requires to stop the construction process, which by itself is very expensive, and to go back to the initial stage". This is why properly developed design procedures of technologically complex objects are of great importance.
The modern technical equipment is another source of pride for the Company. The Company own a multi-storey building in Almaty, specially built for the Design Institute in the late 70's. As stressed by Mr. Serikov, the presence of the own production base (and, well-equipped specialized building is a base for the designers’ work) is one of the requirements for obtaining a licence for the first category project activities. The Company has this license too. Before each floor was equipped with the standing boards with drawing instruments, but nowadays the computers are filled with all necessary design software. According to Mr. Fuad Serikov, the cost of the software exceeds the cost of the hardware.
KGNT in international projects
For designing facilities of the largest field in Western region of the Republic of Kazakhstan KGNT in 2011 established joint venture with the leading international engineering companies. One of its shareholders from Kazakhstani side became KGNT, and in summer 2011 Fuad Serikov was elected the First Chairman of the Board of Directors.
Mr. F. Serikov emphasized - "this is the first case in history of engineering activity in Kazakhstan, when a local company in such a large international engineering projects was not a subcontractor of global engineering giants, but one of the shareholders of joint engineering company established for implementation of such large-scale and technically complex engineering tasks. In Message of the President to the people of Kazakhstan, as of January 17, 2014 "Kazakhstan's Way - 2050: One goal, One Interest and One Future'', Head of State just put us - to representatives of engineering and technology sector, the task "on the need of establishment design and engineering centers jointly with foreign companies".
Hundreds of our employees work in integrated teams across multiple geographic sites, - said Alexandra Bekisheva - Deputy General Director for Economics and Business Development, a member of the Expert Council on Finance and Economic Affairs of the Association "KAZENERGY". - Offices of joint ventures and enterprise partnerships function in Atyrau, Almaty, Farnborough (UK), Paris (France), Rome (Italy), Sharjah (UAE), New Delhi (India), Moscow (Russia), Houston (USA), Tengiz. In our company special attention is paid to development of kazakhstani engineering personnel. So a few dozen of KGNT specialists currently are completing a two-year working training program in London in a joint international project office. One of the key priorities of all listed projects - is to strengthen KGNT as a Kazakhstani company, development of its potential, as well as increasing its role and involvement in projects".
